"Creative Aging: Virtual Family Album Pop-Up Bookmaking"
Tuesday May 23, 2023
Our class today focused on making the portrait page, which signifies the author of the pop-up book., or to whom the book is dedicated. In Beth’s case she is making a pop-up book for her grandson, so she brought in a school photo of him. We warmed up by thinking of a word that described us and presenting a facial and body gesture which suggested this word. Sonia’s word was “shy”, depicted by fiddling with her hands and looking down from the camera, Beth used large hand gestures to show her creativity while a new class member, Marilyn, smiled broadly depicting her happy disposition.
Spica and I shared our portrait pop-up pages and explained our choices of background shapes and colors to symbolize our chosen personality word. I also demonstrated the pocket and how the word is placed in it and can be pulled out to help describe the page when sharing your book.
Spica reviewed how to make the Base page, the V-Fold Stand and the Background using the V-Fold technique. Before gluing into place in the Base page, she used complimentary textured paper to create a colorful background which helped frame her photo. Participants were encouraged to cut out their photo to display it more effectively in the foreground of their page.
A pocket is a wonderful device to hold a Key Word for the page or a surprise element. Spica demonstrated how to make a pocket using the same textured paper she chose for her background, although cardstock can also be employed. Once participants finished their pocket they decided which side of the page, behind the background to glue it in. Next, they wrote the Key Word which described their personality on a piece of light colored card and placed it in the pocket.
Sonia shared her portrait page which featured a sparkly pink background complete with tiny hearts and in the foreground a photo of her family. On the opposite side she intends to place a portrait of her mother to honor her.
As next week is our last class, we encourage our students to bring 4 pieces of card stock, and a ribbon as the materials necessary to complete making their pop-up family album and its cover.
