Spica and I are very sad to say goodbye to our wonderful students at PS22Q. We want to thank The Thomas Jefferson School’s Principal, Ms. Jennifer Meyer, and Flushing Town Hall for making this program possible. A big shout out to Ms. Jeanne Powers, PS 22 Queens Staff Developer and Sio Man Lam, FHT Education & Public Programs Coordinator and all the teachers and parent coordinators who logged onto our classes and offered support and enthusiasm. And finally, the students of PS22Q - what a great bunch of creative, talented, and eager young people.
It’s great to see other artwork our students have created, and they are keen to share it with us. For Father’s Day, Karina made a “jellyfish” from recycled materials. It was so colorful and inventive.
We threw a ball of energy to each other to warm up our imaginations for the start of class. As they were making the book cover today, we screenshared the parts of a book. We were impressed with how much they already knew and other information they offered. Students decided on the order in which they would place the pages they made then carefully glued them together, Next, they glued in another front and back page. Although they now have a book, it needs a cover. They took 2 pieces of paper and placed them horizontally on their desk side by side. They marked 1” along the short side of one piece and glued the second over this mark, making one very long piece of colored paper. Taking their book, they put glue on the front and placed the long piece so it matched corner to corner. They folded this around the book and bent the spine into place. Next, they folded the cover over the last page to create a flap. Now they have a book into which they can add extra pages.
The front of the book requires a title and the author’s name. This was where the students could experiment showing their originality. Dionela chose a red and green cover and titled her book, “My Creative World” using multi colors. Her younger sister, Dianella, chose an orange cover for her book. Dineth also went with different colors for his cover, but he chose two shades of blue. Quick to appreciate color blocking, he chose a slab of yellow for the base and added a light blue patch of color on top onto which he wrote his name.
Karina was absent last week as it was her graduation from elementary school. She quickly caught up and completed the bookcase which she glued behind the table in her pop-up table and chair page. She chose green as the color for her book cover. She wrote her name in block letters but creatively crafted each letter to make them appear to drip, highlighting this effect with a slab of yellow underneath.
Chloe chose a pink cover. Her title, “Chloe’s Home”, was highlighted with splashes of geometric shapes. She added a giant pencil, symbolic of her love of art. Andy’s cover was pink and to illustrate the front of the book he made a small house and added a magnifying glass for effect. Andy Liang proudly added his name to his book's cover.
We hope our students continue their creative endeavors and have fun making art!
