We were joined in today’s class by two teachers from PS22Q, Ms. Jane Mishra, currently teaching Kindergarten and Ms. Jillian Lamano, 3rd grade teacher. We thank them both very much for their enthusiastic support. Our students were right on time today, eager to make the last page of their book. As our vocabulary word is “flap”, describing a new type of device to create a pop-up, we warmed up with a hide and seek zoom game. Andy volunteered to be “in” and hid in his room while our backs were turned to the count of 10. When we turned back, we guessed where he might be hiding. Spica suggested under the table and sure enough, she was spot on! Andy emerged, grinning.
Today our students learnt how to make a door which opens to reveal something inside and either a desk or cabinet or dresser, with drawers containing special objects. They learnt how more interesting a door can be if drawn with perspective and different ways of creating drawers using the flap method.
Andy chose an orange door on which he collaged different colored windows and drew on a knob as the door handle. It opened to reveal a purple interior in which he collaged a giant tree and drew a tiny figure beside it. Chloe made her pink bedroom door and added in block letters “HSC” written vertically. Inside she drew her bed with a purple cover and windows. Next to her door she drew herself in a purple dress.
Dineth shared his completed “looking through a window” page, which featured two large blue windows with four panes each. Through the windows you can see trees blowing in the wind. He has a great eye for color and chose to make a purple door in a red base page. He added a small yellow doorknob. Inside the door he drew an intricate time machine in perspective. Lilia’s color scheme is joyous! She chose an orange base page into which she placed her green door which opened to reveal a tree placed on a blue background. Olivia joined us but her camera wasn’t working so we were unable to see her creations.
Andy chose to make a pink desk and added three flaps to create the drawers. Inside them he added two pencils, a crayon box, and books. Ever inventive, he used a handy yellow post it note to create a computer which he placed on his desktop. Chloe made an orange cabinet and added two yellow drawers with little orange knobs. Inside one drawer she drew clothes and inside the other, jewelry.
Dineth was working on creating the drawer for his cabinet in which he glued cut-outs of a green t-shirt and yellow pants. Lilia’s bright pink cabinet featured a narrow rectangular top. She made two yellow drawers and used the flap method to make a tiny pink book inside one drawer. By outlining her cabinet in black marker, she made it appear bolder in the page.
As usual we were amazed when the hour had passed. Our students are fast learners, and we really appreciate how they willingly try new ideas and are keen to share their creations.
