We were joined in today’s class by Ms. Sandra Paolo, 1st grade teacher and Ms. Leah Lewis who is currently teaching Pre-K - 5 but is usually the Science specialty teacher at PS22Q. Thank you for supporting the workshop. In this week’s lesson, students will make a third page, which includes a table and chair and add a designer background inspired by their built surroundings.
To warm up we played the theater game, transform the object. Students took an everyday object from their desk and used it in a new and imaginative way, hence transforming it. Chloe transformed a ruler into a magic wand, Dionela transformed her ruler into exploding firecrackers and her glue stick into blue lip gloss. It was great to welcome a new student tonight, Olivia.
First, we revised the technique students learned last week, how to build two V Fold stands onto a Base Page. We were impressed by how much they had retained and so we were able to move onto teaching them the fun activity of building a table and chair from folding small strips of paper cut to the correct size. We reinforced the essential importance in pop-up page making of having all the elements lie flat within the closed page and not have anything visible outside of the page.
Dineth selected green for his base page and added a blue high-backed chair and a yellow table with a blue tabletop. Behind the chair he designed a grey bookshelf collaged with white squares suggesting the shelves and books. He further experimented with building a pencil case with drawn pencils in it for the tabletop. However, after we explained that he might want to remodel it so that it lies flat he re-engineered his design. This is what we find so impressive with our students, their ability to adapt!
Lilia chose hot pink as the color for her chair and table adding a blue tabletop. For the yellow bookcase, which she placed behind her high-backed chair, she effectively used strips of color to collage the books. Collage was a technique we introduced in our first class.
Chloe built a pink chair and added a yellow seat. Behind the chair she drew a wide screen TV. She chose to add a white tabletop to its pink base and made a yellow book which she placed on top. Behind the table she designed a bookcase complete with different colored books standing at different angles.
Dionela likes bright colors, and she chose to make a chair from orange construction paper and added a purple back to it. In contrast her table was purple with an orange top. She made an origami bird and placed an open book on the table. Her younger sister, Dianella made a red table and chair and built a yellow bookcase as the background, collaging it with red and blue squares.
Andy joined us late but was able to catch up and made his base page with the 2 V Fold stands. Karina joined at 6pm so we stayed on to teach her this technique as she wasn’t in class last week. She very quickly mastered the basic techniques and learnt along with Andy how to build a table and chair. We are so impressed with their dedication and that of Dineth, Dionela, Dianella and Lilia who stayed on zoom to finish working on their own pages.
What a joy it is to have the opportunity to teach such inspired and creative young people!
