Today was our last class and it’s hard to believe how quickly the time has flown. Spica and I have had a wonderful time teaching K-1 students from PSQ22 and want to thank Flushing Town Hall’s Gabrielle Hamilton, Director of Education & Public Programs and Sio Man Lam, Education & Public Programs Coordinator and Ms. Jeanne Powers, PS22 Queens Staff Developer for making the 5-week workshop possible. A big shout out to the two teachers who helped facilitate our class today, Ms. Maria Petitto and Ms. Rachel Melnick. We will miss our talented and enthusiastic students, Lucy, Stephanie and her two sisters Stella and Sarah, Sophie and her brother, Connor, Flora, Pinchu, Yunxi, Jamie, Gatik and Aaryan. Unfortunately, our other regular students, Martha and Nathaly, were not there today.

We warmed up by molding a giant ball of energy which we each took in turns to throw to the class. Next, we screen shared the parts of a book and our clever students were able to identify them. Today's class was focused on making the book cover. First, they had to put the pages of their book in order and glue them together, then they added a front and back page. Next, they chose 2 pieces of colored construction paper, glued them together and aligned the jacket page to the front page and glued them together. The paper jacket was folded along the spine and the back of the book. This method allows for the students to add extra pages to their book in the future.

Now that the cover was made, it needed a title and author. Spica demonstrated ways of making the front cover more interesting by adding a splash of color behind the title and writing in big and bold letters. Stephanie chose multicolored markers to write her title, “Stephanie’s Pop-Up Book”, while her sister Sarah chose, “Sarah’s Life” as her title. Their other sister, Stella, chose a pink cover on which she wrote her title, “Stella’s Pop-Up Book”. Yunxi cut out a blue shape as the background for her name, written with colored markers and decorated the front of her yellow book cover with hearts, butterflies and “love”. Pinchu was still working on the title and chose white paper for the cover. Lucy’s cover was pink, and Jamie chose green. “Poop-Up Book” was Aaryan’s title, and Sophie chose to decorate her blue cover with flowers and added her title “Sophie’s World” with bright red backing making it stand out. Gatik will use marbled paper to decorate the front cover on which he’ll write the title, “A Sneak Peek at Gatik’s Life”.

Flora chose yellow paper on which to write her title and name as a contrast to the color of the cover and she added a slice of fruit on a plate. Her title sums up our class, “Flora’s Pop Up Book with Lots of Pop Up Fun!” We have had a blast working with these smart, creative children. Thank you!!
