Spica and I want to thank the two volunteers who joined our class today to help with supervision and attendance taking, Ms. Jillian LaManno and Ms. Alisa McGinn. It’s great to have the extra set of eyes!

It was great to see our students again and to be joined by two more, Martha and Lucy. Welcome! We began by warming up our hands, rubbing them together then opening to show what we were holding. Spotlighted students then mimed using the object and we guessed what it was.

After revising the vocabulary, we learned last week, pop-up book and self-portrait we were ready to begin making page 2 I want to hold…... Students folded their base page then chose another color for their hand and cut it in half. Most seemed to know just how to trace their hand adding details such as nail color, before cutting it out. They chose a smaller piece of paper in a contrasting color to make the swirl, the mechanism which will make the hand move. The words swirl can be pictured like a lollipop. After practicing drawing a swirl on white paper, they created their own and cut it out. Dabbing glue to the center they attached the swirl to their palm and the other end to the page. Now they had a moving hand ready to hold something.

The accordion fold is another simple but effective mechanism which can allow objects to move within the page. Students cut out a strip of colored paper and folded it to make an accordion fold. We asked them to think about what they held in their hands at the beginning of class or something else they’d like to hold and draw this object. We stressed the importance of making sure the object did not jut out of the page when the page is closed as this will spoil the surprise of the pop-up. Aaryan drew a watermelon and decorated his page with a knife for cutting it. Nathaly drew a large microphone for her hand to hold. Many of the students must have been thinking about dinner; Jamie drew a slice of pizza, Pinchu, McDonalds fries, Yunxi, a cup of ice cream and Flora a bowl of cereal with a spoon. Martha drew a flower and Stephanie a rose. Sophie drew her stuffed toy and Gatik a tiger, while Lucy created an original drawing.

Quick to learn new skills, our students are creatively designing an impressive pop-up book. Stay tuned for next week’s adventures!
