In Hiping’s background the viewer’s eye is drawn to two small eyes, which look out at us. Diana chose bold colors while Chi balanced her images of trees and flowers and bushes. Alice chose a single magazine image to tear up and reconstruct. She found that there were some holes which she “plugged” with spurts of yellow and red color. Lily created a 3D effect with her background, while Yu Lan’s complimented the red and green of herself portrait’s headdress.
Students centered their background on the fold and glued it onto the V Fold stand in the back. Then they decided on the best placement for their self-portrait. After learning the terminology, background, foreground and layering, they chose splashes of color to create a foreground which enhanced their image and complimented the background. After choosing a color image from a magazine, they tore it into small shapes which they glued onto the front V Fold on the other side of their self-portrait. If so, desired they added torn pieces to the base page in front of the first V Fold. By so doing they created a layered effect.
The pocket they made in an earlier class was glued into place and students thought about a word which encapsulated their first page. This Key Word is put into the pocket and pulled out once the page is opened. It helps to entice the audience to think about the page and ask questions, hence facilitating storytelling. Students will finish their Key Word and decorate it for homework.
We introduced the idea of the second page with a Mad Lib, which helps students focus on the story they want to tell, “Who”, “What”, “When”, “Where” and “How”. For next week they will choose a photo they want to work on and think about the story it tells, focusing on these elements.
