Our eager students began with a warmup incorporating a gesture which reflected how they were feeling. I began with a “carefree” Karen movement, followed by Spica demonstrating “passionate”. Alice’s gesture depicted her “good spirit”, and Sam Sam gestured “beautiful”. Chi greeted us with a “good morning” gesture while Hilping showed us she was “happy”. Lily dramatically gestured “growing” using her hands and arms, Yu Lan used both hands together in a swirling motion to gesture “thinking” and Winnie gestured “good”.
Using their headshot, participants learnt how to transfer an image using tracing paper. This is a useful technique which develops good observation skills and hand and eye coordination. We will also use it again for creating images for later pages. After carefully tracing their headshot, they outlined it in black sharpie then erased the pencil. We encouraged them to draw the major details and features of the face, but not to worry if their traced image was not exact. There is always the opportunity to be original. Next, they copied the tracing again but focused on drawing the hair and clothes only.
The traced image was glued onto white cardstock and cut out. Magazines or patterned paper was selected to collage the hair and clothes. Now participants had the opportunity to change the color of their hair or clothes if they so wished. They added a dab of glue to the edge of the second traced headshot to hold it securely then placed it on the chosen colored paper. Next the hair and clothes were cut out and glued in place on the traced headshot.
Spica demonstrated how the headshot will be attached to one side of the front hinge in the first page, which we will do next week. We are looking forward to seeing the finished headshots sent via WeChat or email.
