As this is our last class before Christmas, we want to wish everyone the joys of the seasons and good health and happiness. It is also our last class of the year, and what a difficult year 2021 has been, with new COVID strains, increased transmissions, illness, restrictions, cancellations, and isolation for so many. We hope 2022 brings with it new hope, resilience, and good health for our community.
Christmas is a time of cooking and we warmed up our imaginations by making food or drink and passing it to another person. Next, we checked in with the terrific living rooms our clever students made. Pun’s red couch is highlighted with colorful patterned dots. She added a long table with a pink top and attached a center cloth. By learning from each other, she figured out how to make flower vases on the floor pop-up. The Christmas theme was evident in a reindeer painting on the wall. Pun also found an image of a little girl releasing birds from a cage which she attached to the wall. On the wall behind the couch, Ru Ping added a 2D window with the blind pulled. Her great uncle specialized in drawing tigers. She took a photo of his artwork and glued it to the wall. Using this same idea, So Sim took a photo of her living room, printed it, and glued it to the page. She made a round coffee table and placed a plate of food on it. The bookcase she made is filled with Chinese books.
Hui Fen added a dog on the mat in her living room lying in front of the blue couch. She added a standard lamp, a cabinet, and a coffee table. Next to the couch is an occasional table with a plant on it. Jing Wei added pink curtains made from tissue paper to the window behind the couch, on which sits a cat in a Santa outfit. She added a TV on top of the side cabinet. She also made a side table with a vase of flowers on top. Lao Yu also used tissue paper to make her green curtains which opened onto a backyard scene, created from a real photo. She made a dresser with a mirror attached and placed a pop-up vase and clock on top. After learning the basics of how to make a box, she figured out the rest!
Sook Fong also followed the Christmas theme and placed a snowman on the wall beside a Christmas tree. She added a table and made a tiny green chair which can be removed. For a fun touch she added a sheep in front of the couch. Stella also created curtains using textured tissue paper. She made a round topped coffee table and placed oversized fruit and drinks on top. The Xmas tree next to the cream-colored couch with red cushions, features Santa and presents. Susanna designed the absolute Manhattan apartment with million-dollar views of the Freedom Tower through the large picture window. The tall standard lamp features lights that shine in different directions, cleverly using yellow tissue. Susanna made an oval coffee table and designed a bracket which attached it to the couch.
Our students really surpassed our expectations in the design and construction of the living room. By sharing their work on WeChat, they can learn techniques from each other and offer support and encouragement. This is one of the surprise benefits of virtual teaching.
They used their sketch books to draw their kitchen and decided on what appliances and objects would be included. Now familiar with making a mock-up, they constructed a 3D sink and a long bench. For homework they will choose their own colored cardstock and make these objects.
Happy holidays!!
