Inseparable Virtual Premiere - November 12, 2021

Inseparable’s virtual premiere was part of The Creative Center’s Training Institute for Artists and Administrators in Arts Healthcare and Creative Aging. Many thanks to Robin Glazer, Director, TCC and Sophia Heinecke, Arts and Wellness Manager TCC for this opportunity. Many participants in the 2 week training logged on as well as viewers from afar afield as Canada!

Sophia posed very interesting questions in the talkback which followed the show, asking us about our inspiration, research, and development of the piece. We spoke of how objects carry meaning and even the most mundane can evoke feelings and sensations. We chose to use a variety of different objects in our show to provoke a sense of wonder and whimsy in our audience. We selected 6 objects as representative of each of the interviewees, a house for Julie Azuma, to suggest her sense of community, a metronome for Nicky Paraiso, for his music, a piece of lace for Mee Mee Chin to represent her bridal shop, a shopping bag filled with personal items for Agosto Machado, which he talks about carrying, a Chinese lantern for Margaret Yuen, for her first dance and a mason jar filled with bottle caps for Eung Ho Park, who creates art using found objects such as these.

Some of our interviewees were already known to us, which facilitated the interview process, but Amy Chin helped us immensely by creating a path so we could reach out to Julie. Although we had set questions, personalized for each interviewee, we didn’t restrict the interview process, but rather allowed it to flow, led by each interviewee. After transcribing the interviews, we looked for common themes. We didn’t want to be limited by the research.

Many thanks to our videographer, John Wobbe and Spica for her marvelous editing! We have both collaborated with Yukio Tsuji for many years and his evocative music received many compliments. Thankyou Yukio!

Inseparable will have its next virtual showing at the Puppetry Guild of Greater New York’s meeting on December 13. We are excited to be presenting it live at St John’s Lutheran Church on November 19 and December 10 at 8pm and Sirovich Center for Balanced Living on November 29 at 2.30pm. We hope to see you there!
