QUEENS PUBLIC LIBRARY - CREATIVE AGING PROGRAM

FAMILY ALBUM POP-UP BOOK MAKING

Blog 7 8/23/21

As Madlyn was out today she arranged for Kathy and Willie to moderate our program in her place. Thanks very much Kathy and Willie! We had fun warming up our imaginations by thinking of words that best describe us then using gestures to express the word. The final page of the pop-up book is a self-portrait, so this activity helped fire up our brains.

Once the base page was folded, we reviewed how to make V Fold Stands. Students made two V Fold Stands and glued them into the base page. Next, they learned a new skill - pocket making. Thinking about the word or words they used to describe themselves, they drew a reflective shape and with a sharpie, wrote the word inside. The word, decorated if desired, was placed in the pocket. Once the page is opened, this word is revealed to help in storytelling.

Another technique learned in an earlier class and reviewed was making the background. Once the excess cardstock is cut off students have a canvas on which to create a background which reflects their portrait. Collage is an effective technique to create an abstract background and newspaper, magazine images or decorative paper can be used effectively. Once completed, the background is glued onto the back V Fold Stand.

If available, we asked students to print out a photo of themselves, such as a headshot. If they did not have a printer, we suggested they make a drawing of themselves using the photo as reference. The printout or drawing is glued to cardstock and cut to size. Finally, they decide on which side of the front V Fold Stand to glue it. If desired, they can add other decorations.

We were very excited to receive a photo of Diane’s stairs page. Her work is truly inspiring! She created a charming page, which featured floral wallpaper and matching carpet for the stairs, leading up to a double bedroom door. A circular rug was added in front of a well-designed dresser. Great job Diane!! We can’t wait to see your pop-up book.
