Accordion Book

Our students have been sending in photos of their homework and we are thrilled with their ingenuity and creativity. As we are reviewing complementary colors in today’s lesson, we began with a warm up using complementary movements. After Spica and I demonstrated examples, Chi offered a hand and fist exercise which she does daily to help her sleep. Alice used opposing diagonal movements of her arms, while Lily shared up and down movements, like an elevator. Hil Ping gracefully waved her arms in different directions, in a dance move.

Students completed the enlarged drawings they began last week using the grid, by outlining them with a black sharpie. Next, they erased the pencil and roughly cut them out. Next, they chose colored paper for the object’s background and a complementary color for the object’s silhouette, which they cut out. After experimenting with placement of the background color and the foreground of the object and its silhouette they glued everything onto the pre-cut white cardstock. Time was given to complete 1 object in class and the other as homework.

For the next page, we asked students to select another object about which they could have different feelings or reactions. We discussed how our relationship to everyday objects can change depending on our situation. For example, we enjoy having a clean home, like using our broom, however it can also be a boring chore. Spica and I shared our examples and the writing which accompanied each. Spica also shared different examples of how to set out the writing, in a shape reflecting the mood, in a frame which imitates the shape of the object, vertically, or a phrase or simply a few words.

We have asked a lot from our students, but we also know they are up for the challenge!! Let’s see what exciting artworks they bring to class next week.
