It was great to see all our students again and ready to flex their muscles to complete page 2 of their pop-up book. We began by stretching our fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders and necks. It’s important to regularly stretch before you begin working with your hands as it helps retain and develop your dexterity. Everyone had done an excellent job tracing their photograph and so were ready to complete the second tracing of just the clothes. This process allows you to use this “pattern” on the colored paper of choice, from a magazine or newspaper or other paper, to create a textured effect.
Chi created her figure’s clothes from a bold geometric pattern, while Diana chose stripes for her blouse and colored the pants in a solid orange using a marker. Helping’s photo shows her parents with a friend who is a soldier in uniform. She chose a floral design for the top.
Sam Sam also shared her finished first page, which featured a colorful abstract backdrop behind her headshot dressed in blue patterned clothes. “Happy Good Day” was the word she wrote inside a heart accompanied by butterflies. This she placed in the pocket of her page.
The photos our students chose to depict in their second page varied greatly, but all told a story of friendship and love between family and friends. We discussed how best to represent the background of each photo in a simple but bold manner. We revised making the base for the background by folding a piece of white cardstock in hamburger style and placing it at the second hinge inside the closed page. The section that juts out is marked with a pencil, then cut off. Now the seniors know the parameters of the background they can draw an image which fits. For this page they will use newsprint as the background and then collage it to create either an abstract or realistic picture.
Our class feels so short and within no time it’s after 11.30am. Having learnt the technique, we encouraged our students to use it to create their background and surprise us with a photo before next week’s class.
