Today is Primary Day in New York City and already some of our seniors had voted!! We warmed up by sharing a gesture that might be used to indicate voting. Helping gave the “OK” sign, Chi the “V” for victory, Lily gesture the check box symbol and Diana shared a gesture for “love”, which is popular with Asian Americans and one I hadn't seen before. I’m always learning something new from my students.
I shared work in progress from Lily, who had finished the figures for her 3rd page. She changed the color of their clothes, giving Thomas an “ocean” inspired shirt reflective of the story of the page, their vacation to Hawaii. She added a sheer wrap over her yellow top, commenting that she always carries one with her, just in case. Situ traced the image of herself and her husband standing in a giant clog, which was taken during their vacation in Holland. Helping shared a pocket she made from a recycled magazine, which featured an image of the Statue of Liberty. We are so impressed with how our students have learnt the techniques and are now applying them to create their own unique pages.
Continuing with building page three, we revised how to make the background, but this time pointed out the need to consider which side they want to place the extended page. The backdrop must not cover the entire page but leave room to view the extended page behind it. Spica demonstrated this by drawing just the entrance to the Storytelling House where her mother’s artwork is displayed in Taiwan, while I shared my background, which featured hills, though cut away on the side of my extended page. Students worked on designing their background while listening to relaxing music.
Using their mock-up of the extended pages students remade it this time choosing colored cardstock which complemented their base page. They revised how to make each pop-up with its own V Fold stand attached and the page in which it will hide. We totally lost track of time and it was 11.40am before we realized it!! Students were asked to draw the image on each pop-up and encouraged to think of objects rather than scenery. It’s fun to surprise your viewer when each extended page is opened, revealing objects which help tell your story.
