We warmed up with a drama game in which each child took it in turns to transform an everyday object into something else. Gatik’s glue stick became an eraser, while Martha’s unicorn hair band became a marker. Sophie sniffed her lip balm like a flower, while Aaryan dabbed his eraser to the middle of his forehead as a bindi. Pinchu’s water bottle became a piggy bank, and Yunxi transformed her pencil into a hair tie. Jamie’s stop sign became a fan to cool himself down, while Lucy’s bag became a pair of eyeglasses. Flora transferred her flower pen into a comb, Stephanie’s glue stick became a pencil and Nathaly stretched her mask across her hair as a hairband.
As not all students brought an envelope to class, we showed them how to make one from construction paper. Then they drew their clothes, either a shirt, skirt, dress or pants and glued the pocket into place. Next, they thought about what could go into the pocket and drew it on white or colored construction paper. Flora drew a purple fan, and Lucy a few red stars. The blue pocket in Nathaly’s brown skirt with patterned waistband held an eraser and pencil. Sophie used textured paper to create a bag with a patterned handle and attached a blue pocket holding her water bottle. Jamie placed a slice of pizza in the pocket of his green shirt. Martha’s pocket in her dress held a cat or she thought it could also be a squirrel. Pinchu drew a donut to put in her pocket, while her elder sister drew a red jar and inserted money. Aaryan’s red pants held a yellow pocket. In this he placed a movie ticket. Stephanie made a blue dress, and, in the pocket, she placed a butterfly. Yunxi made a pair of tiny glasses and placed them in the pocket of her clothes.
Spica taught those students who did have envelopes how to turn them into pockets. This time they drew a shopping bag, added a handle and glued the pocket to the front. Hearts were popular, Nathaly decorated the front of her bag with red and blue hearts and she and Lucy drew hearts to put inside their pockets. Sophie’s bag had a floral design, and she was working on some flowers to go inside the pocket. Aaryan attached an “Ugly Doll” logo to his bag and inside the pocket he placed his notebook. Pinchu made a happy sign for the pocket. Flora cleverly used coin rubbing to create her own quarter which she placed in the pocket of her bag. Gatik drew a backpack and placed a book in the pocket, while Nathaly designed glasses with a flower on the frame to put in the pocket of her shopping bag. Stephanie drew a rainbow. Yunxi made a hat, which she fashioned on her head for us, before placing it in the pocket she made.
Quick at learning new skills, our students’ pop-up books are going to be amazing!
